COMMERCIAL CANNABIS HANDBOOK

Transportation

Transportation is the temporary storage and transfer of cannabis or cannabis derivatives from one physical location to another by means of a vehicle, ship, or aircraft. Within the commercial cannabis industry, this can include transporting bulk cannabis from business to business or business to end user.

Transportation is regulated when handling marijuana and, in most cases, a commercial cannabis license is required.

The transportation of marijuana is typically allowed by one or both of these scenarios:

  • A commercial cannabis business that holds a license to transport or distribute cannabis product
  • Where an employee of the buyer or seller or licensed third parties transports cannabis products on behalf of licensed commercial cannabis businesses

Depending on the jurisdiction, transportation of hemp may also be regulated and require a commercial cannabis license.

A marijuana cannabis transporter will typically offer one or both of the following transportation services:

Business to Business

Business to business transportation is used to move the cannabis product through the marijuana supply chain. The principal function of the business to business transportation is to deliver cannabis product between commercial cannabis businesses holding different licenses while maintaining compliance with the track and trace regulatory framework and product quality.

Home Delivery

Home delivery is used to move the cannabis product from the marijuana supply chain to the end user. The principal function of home delivery is to deliver the cannabis product to the consumer while maintaining compliance with the track and trace regulatory framework and product quality.

Transportation occurs throughout the cannabis supply chain. Due to licensing requirements, transportation may occur even in a vertically integrated supply chain.
